Canada’s men’s national team is ranked 11th amongst CONCACAF nations in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. The ranking, released on 1 July, includes matches up through 25 June, so it does not include Canada’s 3:0 defeat over Guatemala in Oxnard, CA on 30 June. That result, as well as Canada’s results at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup, will be included in the next ranking on 5 August 2009.
Canada lost 70 points in the ranking, in particular due to the devaluation of last year’s two wins in FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers against St. Vincent & the Grenadines. Canada had no new matches in the period between the two most recent world rankings.
The FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings looks at each country’s international results from the last four years. The ranking takes into account the result, the importance of the match, the strength of the opponent, the regional strength, the time period, and the number of matches per year.
USA, of course, had a big jump after winning a silver medal at the FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009. USA not only remains the top-ranked CONCACAF country, but it also now the 12th-ranked country in the world. Mexico, meanwhile, has slipped to third in the confederation behind Costa Rica.
At the top of the world ranking, Brazil has moved into first place after winning the FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009. Spain, Netherlands, Italy and Germany round out the top-five positions.
