Register for a course (Coaches)

Coach education and certification is a major priority for BC Soccer.  Having coaches complete the appropriate age specific coaching course is imperative for the development of youth players in BC for both the grassroots and high performance environments. The Canada Soccer / BC Soccer Coaching Certification Courses provides coaches with the appropriate tools to create the most positive environment possible for players to develop in.

In support of coach education, BC Soccer has the follow requirement for all Head Coaches.

As the governing body for soccer in British Columbia, BC Soccer on behalf of the Canadian Soccer Association is responsible for training coaches from grassroots to high performance levels. In order to meet this challenge, Canada Soccer has developed the Canada Soccer Pathway (LTPD) and tailored the Coach Education Program to this Model. As a result, a two-streamed education program has been developed in conjunction with the NCCP that will meet the needs of both developing coaches and the sport itself.  The Streams through which a coach may enter and/or advance are:

  • Community Coach Stream
  • Licensing Stream (Please note that the Childrens & Skills Licenses are currently being developed and will focus on those coaches who specialize working with players U12 and below)

Each of these Streams include a number of courses designed to prepare coaches for working with players in a specific stage of development as outlined in the LTPD Model.  There are no pre-requisites to enter the Community Stream Workshops and contain no evaluation component while the entry requirement for the Licensing Stream beginning with the C License is a Soccer for Life completion.  Please note that the Development Stream Workshops are currently being developed.

LEARNING TO TRAIN (U9-U12)

Repetitions are important to develop technical proficiency, but creating a fun and challenging environment is still paramount to stimulate learning and promote a love of the game. Game formats can range from 6v6 to 8v8 as players advance through this stage, and again a simple league schedule can be created, but no standings should be kept – the emphasis is still FUN. All players play equal time and try all team positions, including goalkeeping, and the training to competition ratio should be 2 to 3 training sessions for every game.

At this stage, skill training demands and training loads are increased to develop and refine skills and tactics. Tactical awareness becomes an increasingly important facet of training, alongside mental toughness, concentration, and diligence. Elite soccer groups may express interest in recruiting talented young players, but coaches and parents should be careful to recognize and protect the long-term interests of each athlete. Game formats develop from 8v8 to 11v11 (although no 11v11 prior to 13 years of age) as players grow through this stage, and the season moves toward year-round play that includes appropriate rest and recovery periods.

C LICENSE

Canada Soccer piloted the C Licence Program throughout 2014-2015 and it was introduced as the new entry level to the licensing Stream across Canada replacing the B Pretest Assessment in 2016.

NOTE: Coaches who hold a B Pretest designation, (meaning, they have completed and passed their B Pretest Assessment in the past), have been given a 2 Year window by Canada Soccer ending December 31, 2017 to take advantage of progressing in the coaching pathway with the ability to register for the B License Part 1 (B Provincial) directly up until that date.  After this date, the B Pretest designation will cease to be recognized and all coaches will be required to meet the entry requirements for the C License prior to progressing to the B License program.

The C Licence is for coaches who would like to continue with their coaching education at a higher level through the Licensing Stream. It is open to those who are serious about coaching and work within the competitive 11v11 game of soccer (U13+).

This program is divided into 2 steps made up of a training component and for those who wish to pursue formal evaluation, this can be done at a later date.  This allows coaches to practice what they have learned prior to undergoing their practical examination (delivering a practice session):

STEP 1:   C License-Trained Course (4 days of Theoretical and Practical Training)

STEP 2:   C License-Certified Course (1 day Practical Examination)

In addition to this, all coaches will be required to successfully complete the following on-line exams to earn their award:

  • Laws of the Game
  • Coaching Theory
  • Making Ethical Decisions (Competition – Introduction)

Pre-requisite: Soccer for Life Trained status (must complete the Training prior to the Evaluation)

Course Length: 4 days (32 hours + practical exam)
Course Fee: $600 (plus $4.25 user fee / system processing fee)
