Register for a course (Coaches)

Coach education and certification is a major priority for BC Soccer.  Having coaches complete the appropriate age specific coaching course is imperative for the development of youth players in BC for both the grassroots and high-performance environments. The Canada Soccer / BC Soccer Coaching Certification Courses provides coaches with the appropriate tools to create the most positive environment possible for players to develop in.

In support of coach education, BC Soccer has the follow requirement for all Head Coaches.

NEW C LICENSE COURSE REPLACED THE B PRETEST IN 2016

Note: The B Pretest designation will no longer be accepted as a pre-requisite for the B Provincial as of 2018.

Coaches who hold a B Pretest designation do not receive course credit for the C License. However, coaches were given a transition period and exemption from taking the C License prior to registering for the B Provincial as a pre-requisite. As of January 2018, this transition ends and only coaches with a C License certified designation will be able to register for the B Provincial moving forwards.

As the governing body for soccer in British Columbia, BC Soccer on behalf of the Canada Soccer is responsible for training coaches from grassroots to high performance levels. To meet this challenge, Canada Soccer has developed the Canada Soccer Pathway (LTPD) and tailored the Coach Education Program to this Model. As a result, a two-streamed education program has been developed in conjunction with the NCCP that will meet the needs of both developing coaches and the sport itself.  The Streams through which a coach may enter and/or advance are:

  • Community Coach Stream – This is an introduction to soccer and coaches may register for any of the 4 courses (Active Start, Fundamentals, Learn to Train and Soccer for Life). Each course focuses on a different stage of development regarding children, youth and adult levels of play.  Coaches are not formally evaluated at these levels and do not need a pre-requisite to register.

  • Licensing Stream -  For coaches who wish to continue their coach education and be challenged as a coach, the C License is the gateway and the first opportunity for coaches to be formally evaluated. The B License (Part 1 and 2) and the A License courses are aimed at the professionalization of coaches and is geared at high performance soccer and for those who are coaching professionally or pursuing that level.  These courses are extensive and run during the week with a challenging curriculum.

  • *The Development Stream is currently being developed and will be aimed at coaches who may or may not be a professional coach but who have an ambition to progress their soccer knowledge to the next level.  These courses will offer more flexibility to coaches who may not be full time in the game through a modular approach.

Each of these Streams include a number of courses designed to prepare coaches for working with players in a specific stage of development as outlined in the LTPD Model.

IMPORTANT:

Making Ethical Decisions (MED) multi-sport module is offered through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). For more info, cost and registration:  Making Ethical Decisions (MED).

Community Stream:  Coaches must complete the MED training which is necessary for “trained” status in the NCCP database (this is available, in person or home study options)

Licensing Stream:  Successful MED online evaluation pass (75%+) is necessary for “certified” status in the NCCP database.  MED training is recommended but is not necessary to take the evaluation but you only have two tries at the test before having to complete the training.

Game formats can range from 6v6 to 8v8 as players advance through this stage, and again a simple league schedule can be created, but no standings should be kept – the emphasis is still FUN. C LICENSE

Canada Soccer piloted the C Licence Program throughout 2014-2015 and it was introduced as the new entry level to the licensing Stream across Canada replacing the B Pretest Assessment in 2016.

NOTE: Coaches who hold a B Pretest designation, (meaning, they have completed and passed their B Pretest Assessment in the past), have been given a 2 Year window by Canada Soccer ending December 31, 2017 to take advantage of progressing in the coaching pathway with the ability to register for the B License Part 1 (B Provincial) directly up until that date.  After this date, the B Pretest designation will cease to be recognized and all coaches will be required to meet the entry requirements for the C License prior to progressing to the B License program.

The C Licence is for coaches who would like to continue with their coaching education at a higher level through the Licensing Stream. It is open to those who are serious about coaching and work within the competitive 11v11 game of soccer (U13+).

This program is divided into 2 steps made up of a training component and for those who wish to pursue formal evaluation, this can be done at a later date.  This allows coaches to practice what they have learned prior to undergoing their practical examination (delivering a practice session):

STEP 1:   C License-Trained Course (4 days of Theoretical and Practical Training)

STEP 2:   C License-Certified Course (1 day Practical Examination)

MOVEMENT PREPARATION WORKSHOPS

Physical Literacy Movement Preparation is an effective training program performed as a warm up before practices and games to enhance performance and durability.  Movement preparation not only prepares the body for movement, it also improves the way we move, reducing the risk of injury during physical activity and builds skills necessary for performance often neglected during regular training.

Participants complete two e-learning modules in preparation for a facilitator lead in-person practical peer teaching session supported by instructional materials.  This training will better prepare the participant to assist in the development of better movement skills in their athletes through a developing physical literacy approach.

Learn more at: http://physicalliteracy.ca/move-prep/

Sport for Life, in partnership with Canada Soccer has launched a new blended learning approach for the delivery of the Physical Literacy Movement Preparation Program.  As part of the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015™ Legacy and with the financial assistance of the Public Agency of Canada, Sport for Life is working to coordinate workshops in British Columbia and is seeking community partners to host the on-field portion of the workshop.

Sport for Life and Canada Soccer will support the workshop with the following:

  • Cover the costs of the workshop facilitator
  • Workshop materials – coaching cue cards for all workshop participants
  • One agility ladder to be distributed to a workshop participant through a draw or as a leave behind for the local host
  • Provision of online registration platform - please note all participants will be required to complete two e-Learning modules in advance of in-person session

Updates

  • E-learning
    • A new e-learning option has been developed to replace the classroom portion of each workshop.  This allows the workshop to be delivered entirely on-field or in-gym, reducing the total instructional time to 3 hours as coaches will have completed the e-learning modules prior to the on-field or in-gym session
    • Until December 2019, both modules will be offered at no cost (to Canadians)
    • Both modules are automatically added to a participants account profile when they register for an in-person workshop via our CAMPUS site
  • In-person Workshops
    • Hosting workshops can be requested by way of the "Host A Workshop" information page located at: http://physicalliteracy.ca/host-a-workshop/
    • Sport for Life is providing increased coordination support to facilitate the delivery of workshops.  For questions and also to request to host a workshop, hosts can connect directly with me (nick@sportforlife.ca)
    • Once the date, time and location are finalized, I will provide the workshop host a digital flyer for electronic distribution to potential participants
      • As needed, workshop materials will be shipped either to the local host or to the assigned facilitator to bring with them
    • Post workshop, I will reach out to workshop facilitators to gather attendance and gender breakdown for reporting purpose
