BC Soccer Delivers the First of Three Regional Grassroots Development Visits for 2013

Prince George, BC:

In support of its Grassroots Development Service Plan, BC Soccer delivered the first of three Regional Grassroots Development Visits intended for all Northern coaches, players & parents March 8-10th.

“The whole weekend’s activities were of great value to our club and the soccer community. We appreciate the professionalism demonstrated by BC Soccer staff in the programs that were delivered. The whole Regional Grassroots Development concept is fantastic and I would encourage as many people to attend when they visit their community,” stated John Reed, President Prince George Youth Soccer Association.

The visit, hosted in Prince George by the Prince George Youth Soccer Association, kicked off Friday evening with a public presentation and panel discussion, focusing on BC Soccer supporting two streams of development for both coaches and players within the province.

Saturday featured a day of on-field coaching workshops, demonstrating ways to create age appropriate practices that are safe, fun, and challenging.

“I really enjoyed the [coaching] sessions. I have been coaching for 14 years, so I wasn’t sure I would learn anything, but ended up learning lots and I really appreciated the [time focusing on] goalkeeping exercises.” stated youth coach, Randall Heidt.

Sunday’s player development component, welcomed players from across the region interested in learning more about high performance programming. Youth players from 100 Mile House and Quesnel travelled to Prince George to practice with other like-minded individuals and it was a great opportunity for them to receive feedback and guidance from BC Soccer staff coaches.

Not only was this a gainful experience for the players, but coaches who also made the effort to observe Sunday’s activities commented that they valued the opportunity, “I found it very useful to observe what BC Soccer staff taught and how it was applied to real players and situations. [It] solidified a lot of what was taught on Saturday” says youth coach, Trevor Lutes.

“The Regional Grassroots Development Visit is a decentralized effort to maximize participation and awareness about the importance and benefits for supporting both grassroots and high performance streams of development. It’s good that coaches, parents and club personnel heard BC Soccer’s staff coaches and regional grassroots development tutors address topics such as why it is important to participate in coaching education, what age should athletes focus specifically on soccer, as well as addressing competition at the early stages of Long Term Player Development,” stated staff coach and grassroots development coordinator, Andrew Haines.

In line with BC Soccer strategic objectives, to introduce grassroots initiatives and to increase the number of Soccer Development staff visits to the membership,  BC Soccer will be delivering other Regional Grassroots Development Visits in Cranbrook on April 12 - 14th and the Upper Island (date to be confirmed).
