BC Soccer in Partnership with Canada Soccer and FIFA to Hold Grassroots Course November 6-9, 2013

Western Canada’s first ever FIFA Grassroots Course will feature a final day festival for more than 100 youth players at the North Shore Indoor Soccer Facility

Vancouver, BC October 29, 2013 – BC Soccer in partnership with Canada Soccer and FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, will hold Western Canada’s first ever FIFA Grassroots Course on November 6-9 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

“This is an incredible opportunity for BC Soccer and we are very excited to be working with both Canada Soccer and FIFA on this event,” said Roger Barnes, President of BC Soccer. “Grassroots development is one of BC Soccer’s main focuses and we know the positive impacts of this course will be felt by communities across British Columbia.”

“Canada Soccer is thrilled to partner with BC Soccer to bring our third and final FIFA Grassroots Course to Vancouver, following the success of those held earlier this year in Quebec and Ontario,” said Victor Montagliani, President of the Canadian Soccer Association and British Columbia native. “Canada Soccer’s partnership with its Provincial Member Associations is instrumental in delivering relevant and positive grassroots programming that will help us all grow the beautiful game in our country.”

The four day FIFA Grassroots course, hosted at Fortius Sport and Health, will train 30 participants, consisting of BC Soccer’s Regional Grassroots Tutors and representatives from western provinces. The course will conclude on Saturday November 9 with a Grassroots Festival at the North Shore Indoor Soccer Facility where the trained participants will bring their newly learned skills to more than 100 nine and ten year old soccer players from greater Vancouver.

“This is the first time the FIFA Grassroots Course has come to Western Canada and after attending and seeing the positive impacts of the FIFA Grassroots Course in Ontario we couldn’t be happier to offer it here in British Columbia,” said Andrew Haines, BC Soccer Programs Coach. “Furthermore, having the opportunity to host the FIFA Grassroots Festival at the North Shore Indoor Soccer Facility will make for an exciting opportunity for the children involved with the festival, the course participants, and parents alike.”

The FIFA Grassroots Course focuses on age-appropriate activities, small sided games, and individual skill development.  The course emphasizes more than just soccer development, it helps promote and establish a festival based infrastructure that will allow communities to take an active role in making soccer in British Columbia an inclusive sport that is both enjoyable and educational.

This FIFA Grassroots Course will benefit community soccer clubs across the province, as participating Regional Grassroots Development Tutors will return to their communities with more tools and experiences to effectively educate youth and adult coaches.  BC Soccer has delivered more than 90 Grassroots coaching workshops this year and youth soccer clubs throughout the province will be able to further support their volunteer coaches with the inspiration and education that the FIFA Grassroots Course will bring.
