BC Soccer provides members with guidance on privacy law compliance

Vancouver, BC - BC Soccer is pleased to further assist our member organizations by raising awareness of the need to adopt appropriate personal information handling practices and to comply with applicable privacy legislation.

BC Soccer is committed to adopting appropriate safeguards for any information that BC Soccer collects, or receives from its member organizations.  BC Soccer has developed its own privacy policy which can be found at:

BC Soccer Privacy Policy

BC Soccer is also fulfilling one of the key directions in its Strategic Plan by continuing to support its membership through best practice guidance. This follows the publication by BC Soccer of a Constitution & Bylaws member resource template in October of last year. Our aim is to help strengthen the quality of member organizations, and is an example of how BC Soccer invests time and resources to provide solutions to our members.

While the BC Soccer policy is a helpful example of our own organization’s compliance, Clubs, Leagues and Districts which are member organizations in BC Soccer will collect, use and disclose personal information in a variety of different ways.

Clubs, Leagues and Districts may not be aware of the importance of having a privacy policy and personal information handling practices and hence BC Soccer is committed to raising awareness in this area.  BC Soccer wishes to ensure our membership is aware of the responsibilities associated with the collecting, storing and accessing of personal information.  Member organizations handle personal information regularly to support the procedures to govern and administer soccer (i.e. registration of players, discipline information, player card generation, etc.).  There are a number of benefits to having an appropriate privacy policy in place: demonstrating compliance with current legislation, good governance, protection of individuals’ personal information, and protection of the organization itself and the individuals elected to run it.

BC Soccer strongly encourages all of our member organizations to create a relevant privacy policy and personal information handling procedures for its organization.

More information on personal information practices can be found on the website of the BC Information and Privacy Commissioner at www.oipc.bc.ca

“Respecting the personal information of our players, coaches, referees and administrators is a matter of good governance as well compliance with relevant legislation. BC Soccer serves its members and their constituencies by ensuring we respect your privacy while providing a model for our member leagues, districts and clubs to adapt for their own needs”, states BC Soccer Board of Director and Risk Management Committee Chair.

This assistance has been produced in collaboration with BC Soccer’s legal partner, Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP, and demonstrates how the organizations work together to support British Columbia’s soccer community.  BC Soccer is able to refer you to its legal partner, Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP for advice where the organization wishes to hire them to assist you.
