BC Soccer's Commitment To Goalkeeper Coach Education

Grassroots Goalkeeping Workshops, Goalkeeping Coach Development Sessions and a newly revamped Goalkeeping Diploma Course

Vancouver BC December 16, 2013 – Proper Goalkeeping training requires coaches to know activities and techniques specific to the goalkeeper position. BC Soccer is committed to training coaches on specific goalkeeping techniques through the BC Soccer Grassroots Goalkeeping Workshops, Goalkeeping Coach Development Sessions and in 2014 BC Soccer will also be introducing a new BC Soccer Goalkeeping Diploma Course.

“BC Soccer has hosted 14 Grassroots Goalkeeping Workshops and two Goalkeeping Coach Development Sessions this year and we are very excited to build on these education initiatives by introducing the newly revised Goalkeeping Diploma Course,” said Luca Dalla Pace, BC Soccer Goalkeeping Development Coordinator. “To train goalkeepers properly coaches need to know and understand the specifics around goalkeeper positioning, footwork, and proper handling techniques.  BC Soccer’s goalkeeping coach education initiatives not only allow coaches the opportunity to learn the proper goalkeeping techniques but also learn specific sessions and activities that will help develop young goalkeepers.”

Beginning in 2014 BC Soccer will be offering a Goalkeeping Diploma Course which will introduce team coaches to the art of goalkeeping. The contents of the course are designed to give team coaches some basic knowledge about the techniques and skills involved in being an effective goalkeeper and most importantly, the course will give the coaches enough information and direction to be able to effectively introduce goalkeeping into their weekly team training sessions. The Goalkeeping Diploma Course is one day and no previous goalkeeping experience is required. In 2013 BC Soccer hosted more 14 Grassroots Goalkeeping Workshops and two Grassroots Coaching Development Sessions which benefitted more than 165 coaches and they look to build on that number for 2014.  The workshops and sessions are designed for goalkeepers who have transitioned from small sided field to the full field, focusing on techniques and principles that are specific to goalkeeping.

The Grassroots Goalkeeping Workshops are designed for coaches within the Grassroots stream while the Goalkeeper Development Sessions are designed for coaches within the High Performance stream.  The Goalkeeper Development Sessions also involve EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League goalkeepers and the sessions offer and opportunity to scout and assess these young keepers.

“It was great to see member clubs across the province hosting these goalkeeping workshops,” said Andrew Haines, BC Soccer Grassroots Development Coordinator. “In 2014 we are really looking forward to working with more clubs to host and deliver these free workshops for coaches and goalkeepers.”
