Surrey United U16 Boys and Coquitlam Metro-Ford U18 Boys Win National Club Championships

Surrey United Firefighters finish 2nd in the men’s championships with Surrey United Women taking 3rd in the women’s championship

Vancouver, BC October 16, 2013 –  Canada Soccer National Club Championships took place this past weekend with nine teams representing British Columbia. BC representatives Surrey United U16 boys and Coquitlam Metro-Ford U18 boys won their respective championships and are now Canada Soccer National Club Champions. The BC men’s and women’s representatives, Surrey Firefighters, and the Surrey United Women rounded out British Columbia’s medal finishes with a second and third place.

It was an incredible tournament for all of the BC representatives and there were some amazing matches,” said Roger Barnes, President of BC Soccer. “Two National Club Champions as well as a second and third place finish for the men and women are something that everyone should be very proud of.”

The U18 boys from Coquitlam Metro-Ford played five matches and went undefeated throughout the tournament. The boys faced clubs from Ontario, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan before meeting Halifax City from Nova Scotia in the final.  Two goals and strong defense from Coquitlam was all that was needed to seal up the championship with a 2-0 win over Halifax City.

The Surrey U16 boys faced Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick in their pool before facing off against Prince Edward Island in the semi-finals.  After defeating PEI they were up against a tough Ontario opponent, Mississauga Falcons in the finals.  After 90 minutes the final game remained tied but Surrey United’s determination paid off as they were rewarded with the National Championship winning goal scored by Liam Mcllvenna in extra time.

After five amazing matches and some incredible goalkeeping in the semi-finals the Surrey Firefighters competed against Gloucester Celtic from Ontario in the finals.  It was a close and hard fought battle and in the 30th minute, Surrey found themselves a man down due to a red card.  Surrey held strong for a while but was eventually broken down resulting in a final score of 3-0 for Ontario and a silver medal for Surrey.

The Surrey United Women’s team was able to overcome another difficult Ontario team, Scarborough GS United, 3-2 after being down 2-1 part way through the game.  The victory over Ontario gave the Surrey United Women’s team a 3rd place finish and a 10th consecutive year finishing on the podium.

“Surrey United Women's premier team medaled for the 10th successive year, Said Martin Foden. “Their courage and determination was never better displayed then when they overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat Ontario 3-2 to clinch the bronze medal on goals from Nicole Stewart, Kate Qually and a last minute spectacular 25 yard strike from Chelsey Hannesson.”

Five other teams successfully represented British Columbia at the National Club Championships: Surrey United U14 girls finished 7th, Surrey United U14 boys finished 5th, Coquitlam Metro-Ford U16 girls finished 4th, Fusion FC U16 girls finished, and Coastal FC U18 girls finished 4th.
