Introducing the BCSPL Coaching Integration Project

BC Soccer is committed to the development of Coaches, and that is why we kicked off the BCSPL Coaching Integration Project with the aim to provide coaches with insight into provincial and national player identification practices.

BC Soccer invited select BCSPL 2010 Age-Group Coaches from four different clubs across B.C. to attend boys and girls Provincial Program match days. Coaches were introduced to the objectives of the project through a virtual workshop, which helped them better understand the positional characteristics that are outlined in our profiling rubric.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to observe the interactions of our Provincial Staff with the players and BCSPL Coaches.” Says Spiro Pegios of Surrey United. “It provided me with the insight to prepare my players as a coach to what the staff are looking for when assessing the players.”

Over the course of these two match days, BCSPL coaches joined our Provincial Program staff and Whitecaps FC staff on the sidelines to participate in the overall player assessment process.

In addition to player identification practices, this project also empowers coaches to contribute valuable input regarding 2010-born players who may be invited to future Provincial Program activities in this phase.

“Being able to connect with coaches and staff from BC Soccer and other club coaches was a really good experience. [This initiative] gives so much context to what the best players look like, how my own team matches up and areas as a coach I need to focus on in order to see more of my players given an opportunity.”  Says John George of Nanaimo United.

The coaches assessed players based on the provided Player Profiling Rubric and shared their feedback. This initiative also offers BC Soccer the opportunity to identify and build relationships with potential future Provincial Program coaches.

Thank you to those who were involved in this first iteration of the BCSPL Coaching Integration Project. BC Soccer is committed to building on this initiative in the future. Stay tuned to https://www.bcsoccer.net/coaches/ for updates and more information.
