Team BC Reflects on positive Canada Summer games experience

Both the male and female BC teams put in some positive performances at the 2022 Canada Games.

Team BC went unbeaten on the male side in the 2022 Canada Games tallying 3 wins, 1 draw and 0 loses. The design of the competition meant an early round game versus Quebec that tied 1-1 (with Quebec ultimately winning the penalty shoot-out) saw Team BC only eligible to finish 5th within the tournament. Despite the early disappointment Team BC finished strong scoring a total of 15 goals and conceding only 2 within the competition.

Head Coach, Chris Cerroni and Director of Soccer Development, BC Soccer stated “The boys performed very well, our target was to get out of the group, and we felt we outperformed Quebec but didn’t capitalize on the chances we created to see out the game. It’s challenging for any player to lose on penalties and then to regroup and play a further 2 games but their response as a team was excellent”.

The female team was a mix of Whitecaps REX and Provincial Program players, although the team were eligible to field all 2004 born players the team was split with 8 2006, 8 2005 and 2 2004 born players. The team were faced with a big challenge right from the start drawing both preliminary games against a strong Quebec team due to a late drop out from Northwest Territories. The team lost only one game in the group stage and like the males it meant 5th place was the highest they could finish. They achieved this scoring a total of 7 goals and conceding 4.

“The players gave an undeniably strong effort and spent majority of the two back-to-back games versus Quebec in the attacking zone with several entertaining chances to put the game away. Overall, Team BC represented the province with class both on and off the pitch across the whole 18-player roster and made all their supporters proud beyond measure”. Stated Head Coach Chelsey Hannesson and Female Development Lead, BC Soccer.
