Three Soccer Standouts Named Finalists at the 57th Sport BC Awards

Sport BC has announced the finalists to be celebrated at the upcoming 57th Annual Athlete of the Year Awards. Representing soccer in BC are Isaac Boehmer (Vancouver Whitecaps), Katalin Tolnai (UBC Women’s Soccer), and the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Women’s Soccer Team.

“The Athlete of the Year Awards is a true celebration of sport in our province.” Says Sport BC President and CEO, Rob Newman. “The finalists listed below will be honoured at the event and represent exceptional efforts and accomplishments in 2024. We congratulate our finalists and the organizations they represent.”

In 2024, Isaac Boehmer, goalkeeper for the Vancouver Whitecaps, was named the Canadian Championship Best Young Canadian Player and the George Gross Memorial Trophy as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player playing every minute on the way to the Whitecaps lifting their third straight Voyageurs Cup.

Katalin Tolnai, forward for the UBC Thunderbirds Women’s Soccer team, scored 17 goals in 20 games in 2023, setting a program record with seven points in a single match (3 goals, 4 assists). In her time with the T-Birds Tolnai had 40 goals and 21 assists in 69 career games. In 2024, she was named the recipient of the 2023-24 Canada West Female Athlete of the Year.

The UBC Thunderbirds Women’s Soccer team won the U Sports Women’s Soccer Championship for the second year in a row in 2024. This time, however, they did so with an undefeated season, including six straight clean sheets in the playoffs. The T-Birds conceded just four goals all season, scoring 69 goals in 20 straight victories.

Sport BC’s 57th Annual Athlete of the Year Awards will take place on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. The event hosted by CBC’s Scott Russell will recognize the province’s best in amateur sport including athletes, coaches, teams, and officials for outstanding performances in their sport in the 2024 season.  Each finalist was nominated by their Provincial or Multi-Sport Organization, High School, College, or University. The Selection Committee, led by long-serving Chair Bernie Pascall, included a diverse group of highly experienced British Columbia sport leaders and media members.
