What is the BCSPL?

The British Columbia Soccer Premier League (BCSPL) is the highest level of youth development community soccer in B.C. While it sits at the top of the province’s soccer pyramid, the BCSPL participates in Canada Soccer’s Player Development Program (PDP) and forms an integral component of the Canada Soccer ecosystem as it provides a necessary environment for high-level competition at the club level. In essence, it provides a platform for top youth talent to further enhance their skills and progress in the sport.

Players, coaches and referees are currently preparing for 2025 BCSPL action, with the season kicking off on February 22 & 23, 2025 and finishing on May 24 & 25, 2025. This will, however, be the final phase running from February to May, as the 2025-26 season will transition to a September-to-June schedule.

“We look forward to a great 2025 BCSPL Season for players, coaches, and referees to excel both on and off the field of play.” Says BCSPL General Manager, Sian Bagshawe.

“The meaningful competition that takes place in our standards-based environment allows for development and more opportunities towards the higher levels of the game.”

The BCSPL is dedicated to three key areas of development, recognizing that the growth of coaches and referees is just as vital as player development. This environment aims to create opportunities for players, coaches and referees to be identified by the Provincial Program, universities, League 1 BC, and professional teams.

Notable BCSPL Alumni:

PLAYERS:

  • Joel Waterman, Defender, Surrey United - CF Montreal
  • Julia Grosso, Midfielder, Mountain United (now Burnaby FC) - Chicago Stars FC
  • Isaac Boehmer, Goalkeeper, Okanagan United - Vancouver Whitecaps FC
  • Jordyn Huitema, Forward, Surrey United - Seattle Reign FC

To maintain a high standard of development across the league, players must demonstrate a certain skill level. This is often through evaluations or being scouted by a BCSPL coach while playing for their local club.

All head coaches in the league must possess a minimum of a C-License to lead a team. While referees are subject to the BC Refereeing grading protocol that benefits both the quality of matches and the development of referees.

The 16 BCSPL clubs, spanning throughout Vancouver Island, the Okanagan and the Lower Mainland, will compete over the next 11 match weeks with the hopes of being crowned Regular Season Champions. Once the regular season wraps up, the focus shifts to the Premier Cup which will run from May – June, with the finals being held on June 21st at South Surrey Athletic Park.

The season will come to an end with eight teams (four U15 teams-two boys, two girls-and four U17 teams-two boys, two girls) attending the Canada Soccer PDP Championships later this year.
